Stop Romanticizing the Writer’s Life: The Real Cost of Being an Author

This is an example page. It’s different from a blog post because it will stay in one place and will show up in your site navigation (in most themes). Most people start with an About page that introduces them to Your Next Steps After Finishing Your Novel: A Friendly Guide

Hi Roy,

Thanks so much for getting back to me! First off, congratulations on finishing your novel—what an incredible achievement! Now that you’re ready to take the next step, I have a couple of quick questions for you:

Have you had your book professionally edited?
Do you have a professionally designed cover?

If you’ve answered “yes” to both of these, you’re well on your way! The next step might seem simple: just head over to Amazon and publish your book. But, let’s be honest—if I left you with just that advice, it would be a bit unfair, I am sure!

As someone who has been through this process multiple times with my own books and helped others do the same, I know firsthand how challenging it can be, especially for first-time authors. It’s easy to say, “Just go to Amazon and publish,” but I’ve realized that for many, this is easier said than done. Although Amazon do do their best to make the process as easy as possible, I use to feel, like many others still do, it is not that easy.

To really understand the hurdles new authors face, I decided to put myself in your shoes. I searched for “Amazon book publishing” on Google as if I were starting from scratch. The experience was eye-opening. The very first search result wasn’t even Amazon—it was a private company asking for payment to publish a book! This is misleading, as Amazon’s publishing platform is completely free. It was a clear reminder of how confusing the process can be.

Even after sifting through several sponsored ads, it took some time to find the correct page. The number of ads may vary, but the fact remains—just getting to the right starting point can feel like a challenge in itself.

I decided to document every step of the process, from beginning to end, while publishing another one of my books. My goal was to create a comprehensive guide that would demystify the entire journey for authors like you.

Now, I’ve been told that this information is so valuable that I should sell it. But that just doesn’t feel right to me. Sharing helpful information is something I’m passionate about, and I believe it should be accessible to everyone. So, here’s what I’m offering: I’ve put together an “AMAZON PUBLISHING CHEAT SHEET” that outlines everything you need to know. And the best part? It’s yours for free—simply sign up for my newsletter [here] TO GET YOUR FREE COPY.

Of course, if you feel like this whole publishing thing is too much to handle on your own and would prefer someone to guide you through the process, or even do it for you, then I’m here to help. You can reach out to me directly at brian@brian.brogan.com, and I’d be happy to assist in any way I can.

Looking forward to seeing your book out in the world!

Best regards,
Brian Brogan
